Skype expands its API to be used by desktop application developers

Skype announced that they are launching their API to a wider range of developers today. While Skype’s API has already allowed it to make some gains in consumer electronics, this new move will allow the application’s features to be used by desktop applications. This means that we will be seeing a variety of desktop applications making use of Skype features, including video and desktop sharing. The move comes in two flavors:

SkypeKit for Desktop, which is intended to add native Skype functionality directly into partner applications

Skype Desktop API, previously known as the Skype API or Public API, which allows developers to extend the functionality of Skype for Windows, Skype for Mac and Skype for Linux.

Not only will this allow some multiclient chat programs to begin implementing Skype more seamlessly, many of its other features will be able to be used in creative ways by developers.

While a few applications have already begun coming out, no doubt we will see more complex and inventive ones as time goes on, given how easy it will allow applications to build in powerful real time features.

For now, you can check out the existing application directory that Skype has set up.
